Als ik aan Obama denk, denk ik aan verandering, maar ook aan soul. Niet per se om zijn huidskleur maar omdat hij, in tegenstelling tot McCain, wel met zijn hart speecht. Ik geloof hem. Dus zet ik vandaag Of all the Things op van Jazzanova, die je gedeeltelijk op hun Myspace kan luisteren. Terwijl Joe the plumber een platencontract krijgt, zingt Kanye ondertussen lekker op zijn auto-tuner verder op het nummer Anyway en check je nog steeds Sketches of a Man van Dwele. Maar ook het nu al meest ondergewaardeerde album van het jaar: Leave it All Behind van The Foreign Exchange. Gelukkig weet Okayplayer deze prachtige soulplaat wel te waarderen. Na de jump meer soul.


Speaking of Okayplayer, check hier een interessant artikel over de Mark Ronson-ization van hiphop. Bekijk hierboven wat Mos Def zou doen als hij president zou zijn, wat gelukkig niet zo is. Deze week zag ik zangeres Sabrina Starke zo’n beetje overal: goeie zangeres met een Amy in haar stem. Wat dat is, moet je hier maar beluisteren. Yes, you can.

The Mayer is in Town

The Mayer is in Town Eindelijk, N8 bezoeker. Mijn ontmoeting met Mayer Hawthorne, geschoten op een boot in Amsterdam. Mayer is wat mij betreft de beste debuterende soulartiest van het jaar. Ik heb het met hem over Detroit, zijn label Stones Throw, zingen, nieuw werk en natuurlijk zijn album A Strange Arrangement gehad. Video komt van Mamamess.

Italo Trago

Italo Trago Ik ben geen enorme fan van Italo Disco, maar als de Amsterdamse producer Tom Trago ermee aan de slag gaat, kan het wel eens interessant worden. Hij dook in zijn archieven en maakte re-edits van oude Italo platen, zonder daarbij de aanstekelijke, vaak cheesy refreinen te verliezen. Hij doet dit samen met deejay en producers San Proper, Lupe en Martin Duvall.
